Golfito, Costa Rica is a port town located in the Golfito Bay, nestled in between water, dense forests, and hills. Less than an hour away are Piedras Blancas National Park and Golfito National Wildlife Refuge. Golfito also has its own airport, named Golfito Domestic Airport (also known as Aeropuerto Internacional de Golfito). The exit of Golfito Bay leads to Pavon Bay, home to the famous town of Pavones. It has the second-longest wave in the world! Also across the bay is Puerto Jimenez, next to Corcovado National Park. Pacific Sailfish and Marlin are often caught here for sport, but the best time to go fishing is from November to May. Golfito is currently a Duty-Free Zone - this makes it a popular place to buy appliances and electronics for a cheaper price.
Piedras Blancas National Park, like many others in Costa Rica, protects both beaches and rainforests. The mountainous area contains 96 mammal, 37 amphibian, and 42 reptile species. Its biodiversity makes it a popular destination for both locals and international travelers. Golfito National Wildlife Refuge is located just south of Piedras Blancas National Park and north of the town of Golfito. This area also has lots of diverse wildlife and rainforests, but many more waterfalls than the national park. If you are traveling anywhere in the area, this must be added to your list!
Some points of interest closer to Golfito include the University of Costa Rica Golfito Campus, Mirador Las Torres donde Jovita, Sylvan Falls, Jacob’s Beach, Playa Azul, Playa del Golfo, the town of Mona, and the town of Playa Zancudo.
