Sarapiqui, short for Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, is a beautiful town located next to the Río Sarapiquí, Sucio River, and Río Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica. There are numerous rainforest hikes, and hundreds of unique plants and animals (like stranger figs and capuchin monkeys). The jungles and mountains are very popular for tourists, so check them out! Not too far away is La Selva Biological Station, home to more than 2,000 plant species on 1,600 hectares of old-growth and tropical forest. There are also 125 species of mammals (most of them being bats), 470 species of birds, 48 species of amphibians, 45 species of fish, and 87 species of reptiles. Perhaps surprisingly, there are tens of thousands of species of insects, arachnids, and other arthropods.
17 miles (27 kilometers) away from Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui (which some people confuse with Puerto Viejo de Talamanca) is Braulio Carrillo National Park. It has steep mountains, dense rainforests, canyons, streams, and rivers. I highly recommend visiting the Barva Volcano; you will get a view from 2,906 meters (5,934 feet) above sea level. If you visit this national park, you will be halfway to San José, the capital of Costa Rica.
While there are only four hotels and lodges within the town of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, Costa Rica, there are dozens within a few miles.
